Are you nervous about wearing your hearing aids in the rain? Keen to get back into watersports but suffer from a hearing loss? Don’t let your hearing stop you from living your life to the fullest!

Thanks to Siemens and Phonak, you can now access a range of hearing aids with different levels of water resistance, a handful of which are fully waterproof!

To get you started on your journey, we’re taking a closer look at two devices that stand out amongst the crowd: Siemens’ Aquaris and Phonak’s Audeo Life hearing aid!

Water-Resistant or Waterproof Hearing Aids – What’s The Difference?

Hearing Aids

Water-resistant hearing aids, as the name promises, are protected from some amount of water, which means you don’t need to worry about water damage 24/7.

That, however, means water can technically still enter your device, which is why these hearing aids can’t be submerged in water.

Water-resistant devices may also be referred to as “moisture-resistant”, “water-repellent,” or “showerproof”.

Waterproof hearing aids, on the other hand, can survive submersion in water.

Therefore, the term “waterproof” is an excellent indication of a decent level of water protection.

With fully sealed housing and a special coating, waterproof hearing aids leave no seams or cracks for moisture to penetrate.

So if you’re a fan of watersports, go for devices that are labelled “waterproof” – even though there aren’t very many of them yet. But we will get to that in a moment.

Tried and Tested: The Siemens/Signia Aquaris Hearing Aid

Back in the day, hearing aid wearers were wise to stay out of the rain. Accidentally showering with your hearing aids often was the death sentence for the delicate devices.

This meant trouble for Aussies living in humid regions or any hearing aid wearer that was really into water sports.

But water, dust or shock couldn‘t stop Siemens Aquaris. So when Siemens, or better known as Signia, first released the waterproof hearing aid in 2016, the hype was huge.

Siemens Aquaris was built tough and engineered to perfection. As a result, Siemens Aquaris could go where no hearing aid wearer dared to venture: The pool or beach, spontaneous rain showers and humid weather.

With a highly water-resistant coating, Siemens Aquaris was the first hearing aid not only to be water-resistant but designed to be completely waterproof up to 1m for 30 minutes.

For a long time, Aquaris was the only truly waterproof hearing aid available.

However revolutionary this product was, surprisingly, Signia did not continue the Aquaris range. Having been superseded by five generations of brand new technology, Aquarius is no longer available on the Australian hearing aid market.

You could blame the fact that the sound quality of Aquarius couldn’t match Signia’s non-waterproof hearing aids. Or, that 30 minutes were simply not enough for those whose lifestyles revolved around water.

Aquaris was eventually replaced by the Signia Pure Charge and Go AX range, featuring a range of waterproof (IP68) and rechargeable hearing aids.

Signia, formerly Siemens, is one of the leading hearing aid manufacturers in the world. Owned by Sivantos, Signia offers a range of popular, rechargeable hearing aids, including Styletto Connect, Motion Charge&Go, and Pure Charge&Go.

100% Waterproof Up To 0.5 Metres

As part of the Audéo range of BTE hearing aids (hearing aids that sit behind the ear),  Audéo Life has been long anticipated by hearing wearers around the globe.

Thanks to a special Parylene coating, the hearing aids are protected from dust and liquids and can be submerged in up to 50cm deep water without a time limit.

With Phonak Audéo Life, humid Aussie climate and unexpected rainfall will no longer be an issue. Got a sweaty workout on your schedule? Your hearing aids will, from now on, be the least of your worries. Welcome to a whole new realm of possibilities!

Rechargeable On-The-Go, Thanks to Induction Charging

While we’re talking about your new worry-free life, did we mention that Phonak Audéo Life hearing aids come with Lithium-Ion batteries and an induction charger case, the Phonak Charger Case Go™.

That means they will be held in place magnetically whilst charging in your pocket, bag or bedside table. Just pop your hearing aids into the case, and off you go!

Why induction charging? Without cables and plugs, there’s no entryway for dust and liquids, which helps to further waterproof the hearing aids.
